Cheshire East Council is considering paying people hundreds of pounds to quit smoking.

It could launch a pilot scheme which would see the general population offered up to £200 to quit and pregnant women offered £400.

Discarded smoking materials sparked deadly Nantwich fire

An investigation into a fire which killed a Nantwich couple has found it was started by discarded smoking materials.

Beryl Cooper, 80, and Peter Cooper, 82, were found unresponsive at their bungalow on Mount Close in Nantwich in February.

Signs are being erected in all Nantwich play areas in a bid to discourage people from smoking. They will promote a new voluntary “Play Smokefree” code in all Cheshire East Council run playgrounds.
