A Roman necklace sold for a whopping £28,000 at a remarkable auction in Nantwich.
Countless bidders on the internet, on the phone and in person at Peter Wilson auction house on Market Street witnessed the sale of the important intaglio-set necklace.
An exhibition of two Roman hoards discovered in Cheshire has opened at Nantwich Museum and will run until Saturday July 8.
The coins and jewellery were buried for safe keeping nearly 2,000 years ago but their owners never returned for them.
A Roman coin hoard dating from the second century and found in Acton by a metal detectorist, has been acquired by Nantwich Museum.
The hoard includes five silver denarii (equal to ten asses) deposited in a distinctive lead cone-shaped container.
A selection of artefacts dug up during the Kingsley Fields excavation in Nantwich have gone on display at the town’s museum. The Roman dig was carried out in 2002 by Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit, funded by developers Bellway Homes.
