Thousands of fines have been handed out to Cheshire East parents for taking their children out of school at term-time following a landmark court ruling.

Figures obtained by the Knowledge Academy under the Freedom of Information Act show both Cheshire East and West councils dished out more fixed penalty notices (FPNs) in 2018-19 than in 2017-18.

A Nantwich headteacher has hit out at the use of “punitive” fines for parents who take their children out of school for holidays.

Mary Hennessy Jones, head at Pear Tree Primary in Stapeley, spoke after a High Court ruling backed Isle of Wight parent Jon Platt for refusing to pay a £120 fine after he took his daughter out last year.
