Supermarket and fuel vouchers for struggling Cheshire East residents

Supermarket and fuel vouchers are to be included in an emergency assistance scheme to support Cheshire East residents struggling to feed families and heat homes.

The scheme was set up by Cheshire East in April 2013 to support vulnerable people facing immediate hardship, following a crisis or disaster, to prevent homelessness, to keep families together and safeguard vulnerable people.

More people will need Cheshire East’s emergency assistance scheme to support their families once the £20 universal credit uplift ends, a councillor has said.

The scheme provides rent deposits, furniture, white goods and emergency food to vulnerable people facing immediate hardship following a crisis or disaster or to prevent homelessness and to keep families together.

Nearly 700 vulnerable households were helped by Cheshire East Council’s emergency assistance scheme as they struggled to keep their families fed and a roof over their heads.

Figures released by the council show 1,284 claims were made for assistance under the scheme in the financial year 2020/21.

A supermarket has donated more than £350 to Leighton Hospital emergency department to buy new toys for Nantwich children being treated there. Customers at Asda in Crewe selected the department as part of the supermarket’s “Chosen By You” initiative.
