An MP today called for action from Crewe Alexandra in light of the sexual abuse scandal which has rocked the game.
The BBC’s documentary “Football’s Darkest Secret” has been centred on Crewe where prolific paedophile Barry Bennell abused young players unchecked by the club’s management for years in the 1980s and 90s.
Crewe Alexandra have now issued an apology after the damning Clive Sheldon report into the scale of sexual abuse suffered by young footballers.
Eight clubs were named in the 700-page report, with the other seven including Barry Bennell’s first club Manchester City all issuing apologies while Crewe stayed silent.
Cheshire sexual violence services say they are ready to support victims whose memories are triggered by a BBC three-part series “Football’s Darkest Secret”.
The series is based on abuse suffered by young footballers which came to light when former Crewe Alexandra player Andy Woodward spoke out in 2016 about being abused by Barry Bennell while at the South Cheshire club.
Former Crewe Alex football coach Barry Bennell has been sentenced for sexually abusing two young boys more than 30 years ago.
The 66-year-old, currently in prison after being convicted of similar offences in 2018, appeared via video link at Chester Crown Court, where he was sentenced to an extra four years in prison – to run consecutively to his current 30-year prison term.
