Nantwich firm Direct Access has secured a contract with The Science Museum Group, known as ‘the world’s leading group of science museums’, writes Hannah Youds.
The firm, which consults on accessibility issues for the disabled, will undertake reviews of key museum sites, identifying areas of good practice.
They will assess where plans can be put in place to enhance access.
The sites include the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, National Science and Media Museum in Bradford and Locomotion in Shildon.
Steve Dering, Chief Operations Officer at the firm, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Science Museum Group across iconic locations.
“We will work with the Science Museum Group to identify ways of developing accessible experiences.
“With sites currently closed due to COVID we will also look at ways of ensuring an accessible reopening with safety measures in place.”
Direct Access was established in 2004 by Steven Mifsud, who is deaf, and employs a team of disabled people to undertake accessibility audits.
The team has been certified by the National Register of Access Consultants.
The museum group has invited Direct Access to advise on curation and programming of the new technician’s gallery at the Science Museum in South Kensington, London.
The new gallery will “engage 11-16 year olds to understand the role of technicians and empower them to consider career opportunities as technicians”.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
