A man who tried to rob a South Cheshire shop and was overpowered by the shopkeeper, has been jailed.
Craig Hughes, 27, entered News Food and Booze in Crewe with a scarf covering his face and demanded money from the shopkeeper.
Hughes, of Fanshawe Walk, Crewe, then produced a knife and began stabbing the till while demanding money.
The shopkeeper Arumugam Gnanendran courageously fought back and Hughes tried to leave the store.
A man who was about to go into the shop saw the shopkeeper struggling with a man who was waving a knife.
He kicked Hughes to make him drop then kicked the knife away before helping Arumugam detain Hughes.
He was then arrested by officers who arrived and charged him with attempted robbery and being in possession.
He pleaded guilty at Chester Crown Court and was sentenced to three years and 42 days in prison.
Crewe Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Andy Smith said: “The victim and the passer-by who intervened showed considerable bravery in their actions in fighting off the offender and detaining him.
“I′d like to reassure other shopkeepers and local businesses that this is a rare occurrence in Crewe and Hughes is now facing the consequences for his actions.”
