Eddie Morris Memorial - Second-half - second Nantwich Town goal - Connor Heath (1)

Nantwich Town won the inaugural Eddie Morris Memorial Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Whitchurch Alport.

The clubs have made it a permanent pre-season fixture against Whitchurch in memory of the late Eddie Morris.

Eddie was a historic Dabber who’s playing career featured Crewe Alexandra, Congleton Town and Witton Albion.

After his playing career ended, Eddie took up management at Whitchurch Alport with great success, guiding them to the Mid-Cheshire League and Shropshire Amateur Cup double in 1969/1970.

In yesterday’s game, the Dabbers took the lead on 27 minutes through a cheeky backheel by Callum Saunders.

On 68 minutes, Nantwich doubled their lead when substitute Connor Heath bagged a goal soon after coming on.

The hosts hit back just six minutes later when a speculative effort from long range flew into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance.

Walklate then made a brilliant save late on to deny Whitchurch an equaliser as Dabbers held on for victory.

Eddie Morris’ son John, a former England international cricketer, and his family presented the trophy to Nantwich at the end of the game.

The trophy has been donated in a joint effort by Nantwich Town FC and Whitchurch Alport to recognise the success of Eddie as both player and manager.

Director Clive Jackson said: “In honour of Eddie Morris, each season the Dabbers will play Whitchurch Alport to compete for the trophy.

“Eddie was a brilliant player and manager and was well known in the local areas, so it only seems right to honour this local football legend.”

This permanent fixture will be played each pre-season and will be held at the home grounds of both teams consecutively.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
