A former Royal Marine from Nantwich has smashed the world record for running the fastest mile in the world with a 40lb pack on his back.

Lee Riley, of Willaston, who ran the mile to raise money for the Royal British Legion, completed it in 5 mins and 16.9 secs.

Lee, who supported Special Forces through the United Kingdom Landing Force Support Group (UKLFSG) for seven years, has already set two world records for running with his pack in both the London Half Marathon and Marathon this year.

The previous record stood at five minutes 35 seconds, so he knocked 18 seconds off it.

Lee, 29, revealed how had trained for 14 months for the attempt.

He entered the army straight from school before realising it wasn’t for him and then was transferred to the Royal Marines after passing through a training course.

From there followed a seven-year journey working alongside Special Forces in countries such as Norway and Greece.

The world record attempt took place at The Cumberland Sports Centre, Crewe, earlier today (November 12).

The day will be a special occasion for Lee, as it also falls on his 30th birthday.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
