Pandemic - Customer Mark Ray gives a contactless payment to Steve Lawson at Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge (1)

Dear Editor,

I wrote an open letter in mid-March this year to ask people to support businesses in Nantwich during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A few days later the UK was put into lockdown by the government to help control the virus, forcing most businesses to temporarily close.

However, some business sectors have already been allowed to reopen, and from Monday 15th June non-essential retailers will also be allowed to reopen if they meet guidelines to protect staff and shoppers.

Therefore, I once again implore your readership to support local businesses in our beautiful town.

If you love somewhere and want it to be around for a long time, it’s a huge part down to you as an individual to make that happen.

All independent businesses rely 100% on your custom to keep them in our town.

Therefore, please keep it local, as once this is all over our High Street must survive.

If you don’t use something you will lose it. If you don’t visit independents, they will close down.

Income goes into paying the rent, staff wages, cost of goods, advertising and after all of those bills have been paid, a small profit to reward those hard-working individuals who have provided something wonderful for us all to enjoy.

So whatever your purchase – please make it independent.

So when you can: spend, spend, spend.

Thank you for your continued support.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

I will certainly continue to support the certain businesses that have worked hard to instantly change their work model, to the food & drink outlets that have adapted to take out, the farmers who deliver farm produce, to the bakeries and greengrocers that have been brilliant, and the supermarket deliveries and click and collects that started off a bit shakey but run well now.
Life will be difficult for some time, but we will bounce back one day

As one of the local independent businesses in town, Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge, I thank you for your support. As we all start reopening please remember your Indies don’t have branches all around the UK or elsewhere in the world to support them. We are mostly family run businesses trying to survive, employing locals. Things will be tough for everyone, shoppers as well as retailers. But with your support we can keep our High Street thriving. Consider using the independents before queuing at the chains.

  3. I couldn’t agree more, and thanks Jonathan for putting this important point over so well. I would add that not enough thought seems to be being given to how Council policy can also encourage and support these small but important (to Nantwich) shops, recently it has seemed to be the opposite of that.

    • Thank you Shaun.

What would the problem be with the council then, parking or was it the crazy idea of turning the square into an open area cafe?
There have been huge limitations on everyone, the costs involved have been eye watering, don’t expect any special favours for the shops, it will be up to them to work together bringing fresh ideas for the town not really the job of the council, not before in history or ever. The traders can do it, they are capable of turning this around with the main support from all locals, and attracting tourism to the town, because I for one will not be taking off on holiday abroad for some time, when the uk needs all the support it’s residents can give
