Crewe and Nantwich touch rugby squad is blazing a trial after six players were selected to represent England.
The six players, plus one non travelling reserve, have been selected to represent England at the European Junior Touch Championships in Paris this month.
Georgie Mascarenhas is in the mixed Under 15s side with Jess Wright as a reserve player.
Richard Barningham was selected for the Mixed 18s but is unavailable and Alana Gauntlett, Bex Holmes, Lucy Morriss and Mimi Paton have been selected for the Under 18s female side with Mimi, at just 15, named as Vice Captain.
She said: “It’s a massive honour to represent my country.
“I am so proud to be vice captain and am looking forward to a great tournament.”
Touch rugby success for Crewe & Nantwich is built on developing young players with this latest group following in the footsteps of previous junior Touch stars who represented England in the Junior Euros.
Those included Millie Jones, India Perris-Redding, Georgie Perris-Redding, Isaac Wilding, Ben Nurse and Ollie Holmes who is now sharing his touch expertise as one of the coaches at the club.
Previous England players also include Julian Gilding, who won a Bronze Medal with the Mens 40s in the 2015 World Cup in Australia, and George Price who played in the Mixed Open Side in the Euros in 2018 winning a Bronze medal, and the World Cup in Malaysia earlier this year.
Twenty-three of the club’s players across all age categories from U15s to Men’s 45s, will be representing the North West in the Nationals in Cambridge and Nottingham later this summer.
The club hosts a social training night every Tuesday with squad training on Thursdays.
They play in the England Touch Elite and Development leagues with their team name ‘Blaze’ paying homage to the history of Nantwich and the Nantwich fire.
New players are welcome on a Tuesday. No experience is needed and age is not a barrier.
