Johnny Nelson - boxing night in nantwich

Sky Sports boxing presenter Johnny Nelson is the latest celebrity to throw his weight behind a boxing night in Nantwich in aid of The Christie charity and British Heart Foundation.

The former world boxing champion will be at the South Cheshire ABC Club in Crewe on February 19 for a promotional event flagging up the big event in Nantwich on March 29.

Hundreds of tickets have already sold for the evening at Nantwich Civic Hall which also features musical entertainment from glamorous string quartet Stringmania and X Factor opera stars G4.

The evening will see South Cheshire businessman Ken Lawton, 58, and friend Pete ‘Shuff’ Shufflebotham, 51, both former British kickboxing champions, back in the ring for five rounds after more than 25 years.

Boxing legends Frank Bruno, Tony Bellew, Carl Froch, Tim Witherspoon and Joe Egan will appear as part of the star-studded occasion billed South Cheshire’s social event of the year.

Nantwich man Ken said: “This will be a memorable night for everyone, not just boxing enthusiasts, featuring top class entertainment. Tables have sold to couples, friends and work parties.

“We do have the crème de la crème of the boxing industry attending and all are keen to support these worthwhile charities.

“Just one call to Johnny and he was booked to come along to the ABC Club on February 19 to help with promotion and meet club members and our generous sponsors.”

Johnny, a pundit on Sky Sports, was trained by the legendary Brendan Ingle, who also trained the likes of Prince Naseem Ahmed and Welterweight champion Kell Brook, both fellow Sheffield fighters.

He was one of the longest running Cruiserweight champions, defending his title 13 times over the course of his career.

Johnny will lead a Q&A with Ken and Pete ahead of the fundraising evening, dubbed The Road to the Ring.

Ken, who runs Alpha Omega Securities in Crewe, added: “March 29 is just a few short weeks away and the nerves are setting in.

“The training regime has been tough, not as easy as I thought it would be, but I’m delighted at how well local people have responded.

“Myself and friends have worked hard to make this a night to remember. A big one on the South Cheshire social calendar.

“Businesses have come forward as sponsors and tickets are now over 70% sold.”

Around 500 people are expected and posters are going up around Crewe and Nantwich in a final push to fill remaining seats.

Tickets to the Johnny Nelson evening on February 19 are £10, with proceeds going to the two charities. Doors open at 5pm.

To purchase them, ABC Club members are asked to call head coach Nathan Clarke on 07720 381977. Non-members should contact Fiona Field at Alpha Omega Securities on 01270 258881.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
