Crewe and Nantwich MP Laura Smith says she intends to vote against Theresa May’s Withdrawal Deal in the “meaningful vote” on December 11.
Prime Minister Theresa May is hoping to convince enough sceptics to change their minds and back the deal she has struck with the European Union.
But Laura Smith, who says she “respects the referendum result”, has labelled the deal a “car crash”.
The Labour MP said: “I cannot support a deal that fails to deliver for Crewe or Nantwich.
“This was supposed to be about taking back control. Instead, Theresa May’s car crash of a deal is a threat to our jobs and living standards.
“Since her announcement, I have been inundated with emails and letters from constituents on all sides of the debate, begging me to vote against this deal.”
“And it is no wonder. After two years, all the Prime Minister has been able to achieve is to unite people from across the political divide in despair at her hopeless deal.
“Her lack of leadership has led to two of her Brexit Secretaries resigning in just over four months and many within her own party openly saying that they will not support her deal.
“What we have is a government that is in office but not in power.
“I was born and raised in Crewe & Nantwich and I care deeply about the communities I represent.
“I want to thank everyone who took the time to write to me and to those who I have met at a surgery, street stall or on the doorstep.
“I want you to know that I have listened carefully to your views, whether you voted to Leave or Remain.
“I have also met with trade unions and businesses across the constituency and discussed their concerns. All those views have been taken into consideration.
“As a mother, I also ask myself what kind of future I’m leaving behind for my two young children and the next generation.
“It would not be in the national interest to plough on with this deal.
“It is clear that Theresa May’s deal does not have enough support in Parliament. Ploughing on is pointless and it is damaging.
“Rather than focus on a deal that commands majority support in the Commons and across our country, our Prime Minister continues to focus only on her own party.
“What we need is an alternative that would deliver for Crewe & Nantwich.
“One that would put jobs and living standards first. One that would protect workers’ rights and environmental standards.
“One that would deliver what we need to get on with the urgent task of rebuilding our economy, our communities and our public services.
“I am committed to doing everything I can to secure this alternative and I am prepared to work with MPs from all parties to make it happen.”
