Craig Lindfield shoots at goal from long-range v Workington

Nantwich Town made it nine games without defeat with a goalless draw against Workington at the Weaver Stadium.

But Dave Cooke’s men will rue the missed the chances they had to beat a team second from bottom and close the gap on leaders Scarborough Athletic.

Nantwich bossed possession and the chances, but struggled to overcome a stubborn defensive opponent in front of nearly 400 supporters.

Joe Mwasile and Craig Lindfield had some of the best moments in attack for the Dabbers, as Workington’s defenders and keeper threw themselves at every attempt as blocks and deflections went their way.

On 56 minutes, Nantwich had a strong claim for a penalty turned down as Callum Saunders was brought down in the Workington box, but the referee was unmoved by the appeals.

The point keeps in fourth place in Evo-Stik Premier Division, eight points behind the leaders but with two games in hand.

The draw also preserved Nantwich’s unbeaten home record in the league this season, with five wins and three draw at the ‘Dabber Dome’.

In midweek, Nantwich continued to climb and demonstrate promotion form when they beat Grantham Town 3-2.

Goals from Sean Cooke, Craig Lindfield and Callum Saunders earned them the victory on the road in Lincolnshire.

After the Grantham game, boss Cooke said: “We should have won that game quite comfortably and I’ve been involved in games where we’ve lost a game like that.

“I feel if we had played anybody like Warrington, Scarborough or teams that are up there then we would have lost.

“We conceded a goal that was two or three yards offside and sometimes you think is out going to be one of those nights.

“But I felt if we kept playing the football the we would create two or three chances and we got a bit of luck with Sean’s free kick.”

The manager is confident striker Callum Saunders who ended hi goal drought, can now push on and get a few more.

“He strikes a fantastic ball with both feet and maybe he could have had another with the two efforts he had after his goal.

“He probably knows he could have had ten goals by now this season, but we don’t put any pressure on him to do that.

“Hopefully that goal will start him on a run of scoring goals.”

The Dabbers are back in action on Tuesday (October 23) away at Marine down in 18th place, kick off 7.45pm.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
