Woore CC Under 14s winning the title

Woore CC 1sts remain in second place in their bid for promotion, despite a heavy home defeat to Bignall End, writes Roger Horwood.

The visitors won the toss and took full advantage by batting first and hammering a massive 273-5 in 55 overs.

The home side’s cause was not helped by several missed catches on yet another sun soaked afternoon.

Bignall End captain John Maskrey (71), Josh Rhodes (43), Sohail Zaroof (64) and Arsala Arshad Mir (72 not out) piled up the runs with sixes and fours.

It was the highest total Woore have had scored against them for several years.

Skipper Tas Hussain and veteran Andy Kenvyn both bowled 17 overs and and went for 56 and 57 respectively, with just one wicket each.

The club’s pro Dissanagge Eranga Thilina Rathanayke (“Rangi”) finished with 3-67 off 11 overs.

In reply, Woore lost both openers early on and had their backs to the wall throughout.

Hassan Ul Qasim Haleen (32) scored steadily and along with “Rangi” (72) gave some hope of saving the day.

But then the hosts collapsed to 168 all out, the last six batsmen scoring just 14 runs between them.

Simon Howle (5-33 off 11) and Arsalan Arshad Mir (3-52 off 14) took advantage of the attacking field set by their skipper with six catches and a stumping.

Woore 2nds were also well beaten, with Porthill 3rds hammering 209-5 off 44 overs.

Porthill skipper Richard Redman (62 not out), Will Price(39), Matthew Guest (36) and Leo Plummer (35) were too strong for the Woore bowlers.

Only Abbas Muktar with 3-49 off 14 caused them any problems.

In reply, only Uzair Abdullah (11) hit double figures as they were comprehensively dismissed for only 59 in 18.5 overs.

Next Saturday (August 11), Woore 1sts are away at relegation candidates Meakins 2nds (12.30pm) and the 2nds are at home to Moddershall and Oulton 4ths (1pm).

In better news, Woore Cricket Club Under 14s have celebrated an unbeaten season with a title victory.

The youngsters (pictured, above) went through the season undefeated as they clinched Section A of the South Moorlands Cricket League.

Academy Coach Trudie Bloor said: “We celebrated, but with non-alcoholic champagne of course!”

Woore CC are also champions at under 12s and have two other U14s teams who were runners up in their sections.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
