Aldi in Nantwich - by Google Street View

Aldi supermarket chiefs have unveiled plans to demolish the current Nantwich store and build a new one in its place.

The store, on Station Road, has grown in popularity since opening in the early 2000s and bosses say a new store is now needed to cope with demand.

Under the plans, there will be a new foodstore, more car parking spaces, servicing and landscaping contained on the existing 1.5 acre site.

The new store will also create more jobs for the town, the report adds.

In the plans submitted to Cheshire East Council, developers say: “The proposal is a redevelopment of the existing ALDI foodstore that is currently in use.

“The existing foodstore is no longer fit for purpose and a demolition and re-build is considered the best and most economic way forward to deliver a new format store on the site.”

The new store will be around 1,300 sq metres, an increase from the current sales area of 940 sq metres.

The new scheme aims to “visually enhance the approach along Station Road by redeveloping this prominent site in an appropriate way”.

They also want to improve safety and convenience by re-designing the customer car park accessed from Station Road, maintain a pedestrian footpath, and improve pedestrian access into and through the site from Station Road.

It also points to “updating and enhancing the site’s visual amenity creating a modern, sympathetic and exciting addition to the local area”.

And another aim is “to create job opportunities for the local area employing local contractors and labour during the construction of the store”.

Cheshire East Council will now consider the full planning application, with a decision date due by October 2018.

Members of the public can submit their views on the application until August 29, 2018.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Not a good time for this to be happening on the middle of a pandemic we need cheap good food especially at the moment

  2. Sue Reynolds says:

Bit dated this design, really poor use of space. other countries include social housing, Drs surgery, school facilities, sports etc.
By adding a bit more to the roof space you could fit in 30 studio apartments to rent.
Win win as the tenants will need to go food shopping!! (Just downstairs)

  3. Alison maynard says:

Cannot really see the point, as the best thing about shopping there is it’s so compact.

If you need more space why not move the “Specials” to a covered area outside, like where the dead plants now go!

The extra space gained doesn’t seem that great

  4. Object – The applications access and transport statements fail to resolve the current dangerous situation of HGV deliveries having to stop traffic in the middle of town so then they can reverse into the site. This would be a good opportunity to address this issue and make the centre of town safer and traffic flow better. And of course a bigger store means more deliveries…
