A lorry smash on the M6 which closed it in both directions has sparked traffic chaos on South Cheshire’s major routes today.
An HGV crashed into the central reservation on the M6 southbound near junction 19 Knutsford.
The diesel spillage caused by the collision meant the motorway had to be closed in both directions for much of the day.
Tailbacks quickly built up back to junction 16 for Crewe and Nantwich, with large amounts of traffic coming off and choosing alternative routes.
This sparked long tailbacks on the A500 Nantwich bypass at the Cheerbrook and Peacock roundabouts.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said at 3.45pm today: “A second lane on the M6 southbound has been reopened.
“Traffic is beginning to build on the M6 and we would urge people to find alternative routes.
“We are currently awaiting an engineer to assess the damage to the central reservation.”
The accident happened at about midday on the southbound carriageway.
There are no reports of injuries in the motorway incident.
The police spokesman added: “Local diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”
Junction 19 seems to be in the traffic reports every day, are these upgrades to smart motorways really worth all this agro. I think not!!
