A major fire in a disused building on Macon Way in Crewe, just yards from the town’s fire station, has caused major delays and closures across the area at peak hour tonight.

The fire started shortly before 5pm, with some witnesses claiming they saw youths running from the scene.

Fire crews from Nantwich, Crewe, Congleton and Alsager are at the scene, along with an aerial ladder platform from Lymm.

Police closed off Macon Way, and staff in surrounding businesses were evacuated as smoke billowed out across the town.

Staff in stores on nearby Grand Junction Retail park were also evacuated.

A Cheshire Fire Service spokesperson said: “The fire involves the ground and first floor of the building which measures approximately 40m x 30m.

“Crews are using two main jets to tackle the flames.

“Five fire engines have been called to the scene along with an aerial ladder platform. A 100-metre cordon is being set up.

“People are asked to avoid the area as there is a large amount of smoke issuing from the affected building.

“The fire has broken through the roof. Hose reel jets are also being used by firefighters and nearby buildings have been evacuated.”

“Emergency services are currently at the scene and evacuations have taken place at nearby premises as a precaution. The Grand Junction Retail Park is currently closed.

“Local residents are being advised to stay indoors and keep all windows and doors closed. At this stage there have been no reports of any injuries.

“There is currently a road closure in place at Hungerford Road and the entire length of Macon Way as well as the junction of Macon Way and Manchester Bridge.

“The town centre is currently congested and we are working hard to address the traffic congestion. Please avoid the area for the time being.”

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
