Television helped Jasper Carrott hit the heights of fame back in the 1980s.
He was one of those comedians one remembers as being likeable and funny – but without really knowing why!
It’s only watching him live, some 30 years later, that one really appreciates why this brilliant Brummie has been such a firm favourite for decades.
Released from the shackles of broadcasting regulations and political correctness, Carrott’s material is still as sharp and gut-achingly hilarious as ever.
He has never lost the ability to banter with his audience and engage them from the second he walks on stage.
And he is certainly rolling back the years on his current UK tour, ‘Stand Up and Rock!’
It’s more than just his blend of cheesy one-liners, classic gags, innuendos, believable but barmy anecdotes (Princess Diana and the fork!), and clever guitar ditties.
The best comedians have great timing – and more importantly a chemistry with the stage and audience.
Carrott has these qualities in abundance. It’s what makes him so funny and watchable.
In his latest show, Carrott has topped it off with a new dimension – live rock and roll music performed by real talented performers from across the decades.
One of those happens to be his old friend from school, Bev Bevan – former drummer of Black Sabbath and Electric Light Orchestra.
There is also the wonderfully talented singer Suzi Woo, who belts out brilliant vocals of classic hits by Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and more.
And special guest Geoff Turton, formerly of 60s band The Rockin’ Berries, brings another dimension to this unique night of entertainment.
There is also a rousing finale featuring classic rock songs from ELO and more.
The show is on at Crewe Lyceum again tomorrow night (April 20).
