A celebration of autumn comes to Beeston Castle and Woodland Park on October 1 and 2.

The English Heritage castle near Nantwich celebrates its annual Autumn Fair with falconry displays, music, foraging, local craftsmen, wildlife groups, and even a dog show.

There will also be a chance for visitors to explore the castle’s 4,000-year history and 40 acres of woodland park.

The two-day fair also offers families a chance to explore with Cheshire-based forager James Wood, take wildlife tours with Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and learn about traditional crafts with Cheshire Guild of Wood turners.

Event manager Jenny Davie said: “As the leaves in Beeston Castle’s 40-acre woodland park begin to turn from green to golden brown there couldn’t be a better time to visit, and our two day Autumn Fair offers the perfect excuse.

“Join us for music, foraging, falconry, wild art and nature craft and more. Four legged friends are especially welcome for our dog shows on Saturday and Sunday.”

Visitors will also be invited to join in den-building, wild art and nature craft and games such as “scappleagrams”, fruit chequers and pin the grub on the apple.

There will also be food, drink and stalls, and an extra sweet addition visitors on Sunday will also be able to see apple pressing in action.

Fair-goers are invited to bring along their own apples to be pressed.

Four-legged family members are also invited to enter the open dog show (2pm).

Prizes will be awarded for waggiest tail, cleverest canine, golden oldie, scruffiest dog, cutest puppy and dog the judge would most like to take home.

Visitors will learn about the castle’s prehistoric settlers, wander the trails where kangaroos entertained Victorian visitors and gaze into a well which reputedly holds Richard II’s treasure.

The fair runs from 10.30am to 4pm, with different activities throughout the day.

The Dog Show will be held at 2pm both days, with entries accepted until 15 minutes before the competition.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
