Smallest Show on Earth

‘The Smallest Show on Earth’ is the story of Jean and Matthew – who discover they have inherited their very own cinema, writes Claire Faulkner.

Desperate to save the ‘Bijou Kinema’ from becoming a car park, the couple enlist the help of the cinema’s staff to bring the building back to its former glory.

Directed by Thom Southerland, this show is filled to the brim with Irving Berlin songs, and celebrates the British love for classic films and music hall entertainment.

Based on the 1957 comedy film, it is a heart-warming feelgood story with full song and dance routines, a cross dressing lawyer and some great one liners.

The cast were led by Liza Goddard, who played ‘Mrs Fazackalee’, and Brian Capron as ‘Percy Quill’.

The newlyweds ‘Jean’ and ‘Matt’ were played by Laura Pitt-Pulford and Haydn Oakley, both had wonderful voices and worked incredibly well together.

There is a delightful routine to ‘Steppin’ Out With My Baby’ from Christine Bennington and Sam O’Rourke, who play ‘Marlene’ and ‘Tom’, the young sweet hearts from rival families.

Be ready for Matthew Crowe as ‘Robin Carter’ who steals the show as the Sloughborough Songbird.

‘The Smallest Show on Earth’ is good fun.

A happy piece of theatre escapism.

Running at The Lyceum until November 14.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
