Nantwich Town coach Neil Sorvel was full of praise for his players after they hit top-spot in the league away at Barwell, writes Richard Scott.
A 17-minute hat-trick by substitute Liam Shotton helped them to a 4-0 victory.
And former Crewe Alexandra star Sorvel says the team’s “togetherness” in training and in matches is one of the key factors in their early season success.
He said: “They are a great group of lads.
“We put the sessions on. But they make the sessions with the effort and the application they put in.
“We have in the last couple of weeks worked on finishing in and around the box and making good decisions.
“We’re not aiming in crosses for the sake of it and that has shown on Tuesday and Saturday with the lads picking out team-mates in the box with little crosses and little cutbacks and it’s led to goals. So we are delighted with that.”
The win at Kirkby Road was watched by another excellent following of Dabbers fans – something Sorvel says inspires the players.
“The fans are always great, especially away from home.
“We have that core group of following who are there every game home and away, they really get behind the team all game, every game.
“They offer them every bit of encouragement and the more we get the merrier.”
Nantwich Town hat-trick hero Shotton thanked his team-mates after blasting his hat-trick in just 17 minutes.
Shotton said: “I had three chances and I put them away.
“As a striker I have to put my chances away and I rely on the players passing to me because if they don’t then I don’t score.
“I would like to thank them and it’s a whole team effort, not just one player.”
Shotton actually went close to scoring a hat-trick off the bench in his first spell at the club in a Cheshire Senior Cup tie back in 2008.
The game under Steve Davis saw the Dabbers win 5-0 that night.
But the forward also believes the defence should take a lot of praise.
Goalkeeper Terry Smith and defenders Andy White, Mat Bailey, Ben Harrison and Darren Thornton kept their first clean sheet of the season.
Shotton said: “The aim was to keep a clean sheet and I knew we could do it. I had faith in the lads doing and it was long over due.
“It always good when you score to look at the table that night and you see you are top.”
The Dabbers travel to face Colwyn Bay tomorrow (September 25), kick off 3pm.
