One of the most important private collections of early British pottery is to be sold by Nantwich auctioneers Peter Wilson.
The sale of the Harold Blakey Collection will take place at the Market Street saleroom on Wednesday September 16.
The collection includes 350 examples of rare pottery dating from the mid 18th to the early 19th centuries divided into 108 lots.
It covers areas like Prattware, Creamware, Pearlware, Black Basalt and Redware from the country’s most important manufacturers.
Mr Blakey was a regular contributor to ceramic society’s journals and publications.
The collection is expected to sell for around £12,000.
Among the rarest and most valuable is Bristol pottery pearlware jug (pictured, below), estimated at £500-800.
Among the many Staffordshire potteries represented is a feldspathic stoneware barrel, made in about 1830 by John Lockett. His brother Thomas, had a factory in King Street, Longton.
One creamware lidded jug, 1770, raised on three feet with bird finial and sprigged decoration, was made by Thomas Whieldon (1719-1795) of Little Fenton, who was a partner of the great Josiah Wedgwood.
Patricia Halfpenny, fellow member of the Northern Ceramic Society, describes Harold Blakey (1924-2014) as a serious and generous researcher.
He wrote more than 50 articles for the NCS Newsletter, and combined his research and writing with editing the Newsletter from 1988-95.
Harold’s passion for ceramics carried him to seminars, meetings, and antique fairs for over 40 years. He attended his last fair only days before his death in 2014.
“Just as the current generation of collectors and scholars is indebted to Harold Blakey for his generosity, so the next generation will also have many reasons to remember him and give him their thanks,” said Pat Halfpenny.
The September 16 sale is the first of Peter Wilson’s two-day fine Autumn auction.
Viewing is on Sunday September 13, 2-4pm; Monday September 14, 10am-5pm; Tuesday September 15, 10am-5pm, and on the morning of the sale 9-11am.
