Media students from Crewe and Nantwich have taken to the microphone to launch their own regular show on The Cat Community Radio.
The Crewe and Nantwich station, based at South Cheshire College, has given students a chance to host a show and gain valuable broadcast experience.
Seven BTEC diploma media students are taking to the airwaves after attending broadcasting training sessions and shadowing a presenter from The Cat.
Students Jenny Jardine and Dan Nugent delivered their first live show from The Cat studio under the guidance of media technician Philippa Richford and station presenter and Stuart Kay.
The show, called ‘Good Morning Cheshire with South Cheshire College, will become a regular morning slot.
As well as broadcasting, students can also be involved in behind-the-scenes production activities at The Cat.
Student Dan Nugent said: “We are very excited about working with The Cat which is a fantastic opportunity for us all.
“Our show is a mix of music, general chat and much more so we would encourage people to tune in and see what it’s all about.”
The Cat moved from Nantwich to the college after winning an FM licence to broadcast on 107.9FM.
It has a studio base for daily broadcasts and office space for admin and off air tasks.
All the radio equipment has been funded by Nantwich Town Council, Cheshire East Council and Crewe Town Council.
Stuart Kay said: “These are very exciting times for The Cat Radio and we are delighted students are now presenting their own show.
“Part of our mission is to encourage students and other members of the community to get involved with our broadcasts.
“The support the station has had from the local community has been phenomenal and people recognise there has been a big gap in terms of FM radio representation in the Crewe and Nantwich area.”
Media lecturer Lynn Simpson said: “Students are planning each show week by week and are hoping their programme captures the imagination in the wider community.”
Media programmes at South Cheshire College give students the skills and knowledge they need for careers in the film and media world.
