The 2014 Nantwich Words and Music Festival was launched in rousing style in the town square.

Organisers, friends, family and performers gathered in Enzo coffee shop for the official launch.

And guests in the packed venue were treated to some brilliant tunes by quirky Yorkshireman “Winkie Thin”.

The accomplished ukelele player, accordionist and crooner entertained and helped create a splendid atmosphere.

Organiser Nigel Stonier gave a brief launch speech, guides to what’s on through the week were handed out, and raffle tickets sold for various prizes donated by backers.

Later, in the Crown Ballroom, 90s Brit pop band Dodgy played to a packed audience.

youngsters with Nigel Stonier, organiser of Words and Music FestivalThey relived some memories, playing hit songs like “Good Enough” and “Staying Out for the Summer”, as well as tunes from their new album.

Other stars lined up this week include renown performance poet Luke Wright tonight (October 7) at Crown Ballroom,  7.30pm, and former Echo and the Bunnymen frontman Ian McCullough tomorrow (October 8), also at Crown Ballroom.

On the same night at Players Theatre on Love Lane, John Halpern will bring a unique show to Nantwich in Paul’s World of Wordplay Wizardry!

John is “Paul” of The Guardian, seen as the UK’s number one crossword setter. He’ll be showing the audience how it’s done from 7pm.

Mark Radcliffe and Galleon Blast will be live at Crown Ballroom on Thursday (October 9) from 7.30pm, and on the same night Enzo will be staging a free to enter “acoustic zone” showcasing local performers like Jonathan Tarplee, Tiki Black and Chris Capel from 5.30pm.

The following night, October 10,  Badly Drawn Boy will be performing at Crown Ballroom, shows start at 7.3opm.

BBC Radio presenter Janice Long will be at Malbank Studio Theatre on Saturday October 11 from 1.30pm, introducing new musical acts including Flight Brigade and Mo Kenney.

Later at 8pm, popular performer Thea Gilmore is back fronting a sold-out show at the same venue.

Monty Python songwriter and comedian Neil Innes will be at Crown Ballroom from 2pm on Sunday October 12, and King Creosote will be at the same venue later that day from 7.30pm
