Steve Phillips, former Crewe Alex and new Nantwich Town keeper

Nantwich Town goalkeeper Steve Phillips is to leave the club and return to the West Country, it has emerged.

The former Crewe Alexandra star requested to be released from his Dabbers contract this week.

The club has agreed to release him so he can continue to play non-league football near to his new home, where his wife is taking up a position at Bath General Hospital.

Phillips told Nantwichnews:”It’s sad to leave but buzzing I’m moving back home.

“We’ve been planning to at some point but this is pretty out the blue.

“Thankyou to Nantwich Town for the brief opportunity to play.

“It’s a brilliant club and I wish everyone the very best.”

Manager Danny Johnson said: “It’s a blow but we mustn’t forget that we have Terry Smith fully fit and hungry for success.

“Steve is moving back to his home in Somerset so there was not much anyone at the club could do to change his mind.

“It’s one of those things but we will move on quickly.

“Steve would have been a real fans’ favourite, I have no doubt about that. But non-league is a turbulent environment.

“Everyone connected with the club wishes Steve the very best of luck for the future.”

It’s believed Phillips could be joining Shepton Mallet FC in the near future.

The move ends a long association for Phillips with SouthCheshire.

At Crewe, he enjoyed several seasons of success, including two Wembley victories securing promotion and winning the Johnstone Paint Trophy.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
