A five-vehicle smash has closed the M6 motorway northbound in Cheshire between junctions 16 for Nantwich and 18 for Holmes Chapel.
Drivers are warned to stay clear of the M6 after the accident today (July 17).
Firefighters had to cut five people free from the wreckage who were trapped.
Two of the injured have now been released by firefighters and are being treated by paramedics.
An air Ambulance attended and the motorway was closed in both directions for some time, the southbound carriageway temporarily shut between junctions 17 and 16.
The southbound side has now re-opened, but congestion is tailing back to junction 20, M56 interchange.
Matrix signs for 40mph are in place well in advance of the scene in both directions.
The accident will have a knock on impact for Nantwich and Crewe, with many motorists seeking alternative routes going north, using the A500 and A51/A49.
