An L.S. Lowry painting sold for an amazing £39,000 at art auction in Nantwich.

A trade buyer snapped up the iconic “People on a Promenade” felt tip pen and pencil sketch during the two-day sale at Peter Wilson auctioneers on Market Street.

The work, signed and dated 1969 and inscribed “To Lawrence Ives from L. S. Lowry”, was the highlight of what the auction house say was one of the biggest sales seen for years.

A collection of 25 pictures by Geoffrey Key, described as the best artist to come along since Lowry, sold for a total of £51,150.

And interest in the works of another Manchester artist, William Turner (1920-2013), was evident.

The sale included 12 of his paintings, which sold for a total of £21,650.

Most valuable was a street scene called “Pritchards Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock” which sold for £7,200, followed by an unframed view of Antwerp Harbour at £5,600.

Arthur Delaney’s Manchester street scenes found some eager buyers. “Warren Street, Stockport”, an oil on board signed and titled on the mount, sold for an above estimate £5,200.

Other artist’s works to feature in the sale included Yorkshire-born Donald McIntyre and Chester artist Daniel Clowes.

There were  700-plus lots offered over the two day sale, varying from Northern art to a Japanese ivory netsuke (belt toggle) of a mythical character standing with a dog, which sold for £3,700.

Entries are now invited for the important Summer sale of fine art, antiques and collectors’ items on July 9-10, entries for which close on May 30.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
