A cyclist killed in a collision with a lorry on the A530 near Nantwich has been named as Stewart Gandy.

The 65-year-old, from Wistaston, was cycling towards Whitchurch near Aston when the crash happened.

Today, police arrested a 36-year-old man in Wigan in connection with the incident.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers have now traced a lorry believed to be involved in the collision and inquiries are continuing at this time.

“A 36-year-old was arrested in Wigan this afternoon. He remains in custody.”

Family support officers are comforting Mr Gandy’s family.

Relatives have taken to social media networks like Twitter urging any witnesses to come forward.

It’s thought Mr Gandy was a member of the Masonic Lodge and other groups such as Companions of Cheshire.

On Twitter, the Companions of Cheshire wrote: “It is with extreme sadness we announce the tragic passing of E.Companion Stewart Roy Gandy…”

The incident happened at about 1.40pm yesterday (November 12) close to Baddeley Bridge.

Police closed the busy road for several hours in both directions while forensic examinations took place.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 453 of 12 November.

  1. Stuart Gandy was one of Cheshire`s most senior Masons,very highly regarded and respected and will very sorely missed by all of masonry.
    He was the Provincial Director of Ceremonies for the previous Grand Master Timothy Richards.
    An outstanding mason with extraordinary high standards,I was lucky enough to have been a steward under him.

    Our sincere condolences to his family,we paid our respects at our Chapter meeting tonight.
