A couple living at Richmond Village in Nantwich have been celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.

Harold and Dorothy Shaw were joined by family, friends and Richmond staff to mark the milestone.

And the day started with the delivery of a congratulations card from HRH Queen Elizabeth II and continued with flowers and cards being brought by friends and family.

A huge bouquet from all staff and residents at Richmond Nantwich was presented to them at tea together with a celebration cake.

The happy couple were both born and raised in Rochdale and met as teenagers through their interest in singing.

“We were both in a choir,” Dorothy recalls.

“And that’s how we came to get to know one another.”

Their romance continued despite the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harold was drafted into the Royal Airforce at the age of 19.

He was discharged aged 28, after spending four years at a base in India.

They married on his return and had two sons David and Martyn, who was named after the church they were married in.

Harold went on to serve in the police force and recalls being at a football match one day in the snow and having his hat knocked off by a supporter’s well-aimed shot.

“Everyone laughed and cheered,” Harold remembers. “And I turned round and bowed!”

Hilary Minshull, care manager at Richmond Village, said: “We were all delighted to be able to share this very special celebration with Harold and Dorothy.

“They are a lovely couple and we wish them many more happy years together.”

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
