Nantwich Museum trustees believe the venue has a bright future despite tough economic times.
Members of Nantwich Museum Trust Ltd have expressed “cautious optimism” after a 6% rise in visitor numbers.
In 2012/13, 36,428 people visited the Pillory Street venue, and there was a 7% increase during the three months of last summer’s major Nantwich under the Two Elizabeths exhibition.
“It has been another challenging year for the museum and the trustees have devoted much effort towards securing its financial future,” said a spokesman.
“Traditional sources of income, the regular grants, are declining and under threat while other income streams have tended to remain flat in recent years.
“At the same time the costs of running the museum continue to rise.
“Efforts are being made to economise wherever possible but many costs are unavoidable.”
The revamped shop which is featuring more items of local interest is proving a success.
Meanwhile, the Advocates Group is working with trustees to raise the profile of the museum and seek new sources of funding.
New initiatives included the display of the town’s Roman artefacts and the development of the museum’s website to form an archive of what has gone before.
There is also an interactive element to improve communication and greater involvement of young people.
Trustees also acknowledged support received from local organisations and media outlets like Nantwichnews, as well as the museum’s staff, volunteers and members.
“The museum is independent and exists to tell the story of Nantwich’s rich history by collecting, safeguarding and making accessible local artefacts which it holds in trust for society,” the spokesman added.
“It also provides a centre for the inspiration, learning and enjoyment of all.”
