The Connect 2 Crewe-Nantwich Greenway will be officially unveiled to the public this week.

Councillors, campaign groups, community leaders and the public will attend the opening alongside the A530, near Alvaston Hall.

A portrait bench,  a feature of Connect 2 routes across the country, will also be unveiled.

The Crewe-Nantwich bench will feature a railwayman for Crewe, a roundhead civil war soldier for Nantwich and a Roman soldier indicating the earlier history of this part of Cheshire East.

Wednesday’s opening marks the end of several years of work to create a 4km rural corridor between the towns alongside the A530 Middlewich Road.

It is hoped the Greenway will increase the amount of people walking and cycling in South Cheshire by offering a traffic-free way of getting between the two towns.

It provides a link to shops, schools and employment areas within Cheshire East, increasing health and environmental benefits.

Mayor of Cheshire East Cllr George Walton and Cllr David Topping, Cabinet member in charge of the environment, will be at the event along with residents, councillors, community group leaders, Sustrans representatives and active travel groups.

Local groups who have all chipped in to help create the corridor include Greenspaces South Cheshire CICReaseheath College, Rotary Club of Crewe & Nantwich Weaver, Wistaston Conservation Group among others.

The ceremony takes place at 2pm on Wednesday (March 20)

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Great news!! Thank you to all involved. I would like to join at the Rising Sun, walking along Wistaston Greed Road, but there isn’t a foot path and it is a dangerous road.

  2. Of course why anyone would want to walk along the side of Middlewich Road when there are so many more beautiful places in Cheshire to enjoy is anyone’s guess. They would have been better improving the safety at the junction next to the Rising Sun, or putting a proper cycle lane along Crewe Road.

This is a great facility for cyclists in south Cheshire. The A530 Middlewich Road is always busy so this pathway will encourage more cyclists and walkers. There has been a huge investment on cycle pathways all over the country, so why not here as well. Good on the council and everyone else who has been involved with this project.

Not sure how long the popularity of this path as a pedestrian and cycle path will last. The path is already quickly filling up with horse manure. The powers that be thought it would be a good idea to allow horses on a paved pedestrian and cycle path. Sure if you have a dog you are expected to clean up the mess. But not a horse!

I am sure all those Joggers and cyclists who have always wanted to cross Middlewich Road will be delighted by the new crossing. I would however be very interested to understand the decision making process that concluded that the new middlewich Road crossing was a higher priority than putting a crossing outside St.Anne’s school in Nantwich.

  6. I would use the Greenway as a safe route between Crewe and Nantwich on a leisure ride on my bicycle. I’m pleased they’ve added a Pelican crossing on Middlewich Road, as there have been so many accidents in the past. Hopefully the lights coupled with the lower speed will also make the area safer for all road users.

What a complete waste of money. In this day and age when everyone takes the car to work and their lifestyle revolves around taking the kids on the ‘school run’ I wonder just how many will be using this facility. You hardly see anyone cycling to work these days as it is. This is not the 1960’s when workers were cycling to Rolls Royce and Crewe Works every day. Our lifestyles have changed, maybe not for the better, but the councillors don’t seem to see they are living in the past.
The tarmac would have been put to far better use filling in some of the horendous pot holes in the roads.

People DO walk and cycle, even those of us who drive. After all, all of us could walk before driving. It will be so good to walk along the A530 well away from the fast traffic that travels along that road. Try it, you and your family might enjoy yourselves. I do agree that the potholes are in urgent need of repair. However, ths money for the greenway is lottery-funded and NOT money allocated for road repairs.
