A cake-a-thon is being held at a Nantwich pub in memory of a teenager from the town who died playing rugby.

The Clandestine Cake Club wants to raise money for C.R.Y(Cardiac Risk in the Young) in memory of Matthew Dewhirst.

The Boot & Shoe pub on Hospital Street will stage the cake-a-thon on January 14 – which would have been Matthew’s 18th birthday.

Matthew was taking part in rugby training last summer when he collapsed and died of Sudden Arrhythmic Death at his college in Shropshire.

The teenager, who went to school at The Grange in Hartford, had played at the Crewe Alexandra Academy in the junior squads and was a season ticket holder at Gresty Road.

In 2005 he won South Cheshire Junior Footballer of the year but switched his attention to rugby when the family moved from Nantwich to Shropshire.

Members of the cake club, which meets in secret locations each month, are joining Matthew’s friends and family from Shropshire and Nantwich to celebrate his life with the fund raiser.

People are also invited to take along a cake or cakes to sell.

All cake slices will be just £1 and money raised goes to C.R.Y (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

The event starts at the Boot & Shoe on Monday January 14 from 7pm. All welcome.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
