Two police officers injured when their car smashed into a tree in Nantwich were responding to reports of a supermarket burglary, it has emerged.
The officers suffered head injuries when their marked vehicle careered off Beam Street and into a tree.
They had been responding to a 999 call following an attempted burglary at a supermarket in Nantwich at around 4am today (November 7).
Both officers, a man and a woman based at Nantwich police station, were treated for head injuries at Leighton Hospital and have now been discharged. The road was closed at Beam Street until 8am.
One resident on The Crescent, close to where the accident happened, described how she heard the “bang” at around 4am.
“I looked out of the window and saw the car had skidded off the road,” she said.
“I didn’t know if it had been chasing anyone, but an officer told me they were responding to a call.
“I’m just glad they are not badly hurt, but we’ve had investigators here all morning taking measurements and pictures.”
A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said there were no other vehicles involved in the accident.
An investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
