Nantwich Town couldn’t repeat their Cheshire Cup midweek heroics of Moss Rose when they were beaten 2-1 by league rivals Northwich Victoria.
The Vics, playing at ‘home’ at Macclesfield, came from behind to beat Jimmy Quinn’s side and boost their Evo-Stik Premier League title hopes.
The Dabbers, who have defeated the Vics twice already this season, will be disappointed to have come away pointless as Martin Foyle’s side cling on to the coat-tails of title favourites Chester.
In an even and less than inspiring first half, Nantwich came the closest to breaking the deadlock when Dave MacPherson flicked Sean Cooke’s corner on to the bar.
The second half was only minutes old when the Dabbers took the lead as Simon Everall got the better of John Disney and fired past Ben Hinchcliffe in the Northwich goal.
But Vics responded with two goals in seven minutes to take charge of the game.
Ian Kearney equalised on 57 minutes and when the Dabbers’ defence failed to close down Wayne Riley, the Northwich striker curled a neat 20-yarder past Jonny Brain for what proved to be the winning goal.
The defeat sees Nantwich slip further down the table into 14th spot and only nine points clear of the relegation places.
Nantwich: Brain, Lowe, White, MacPherson, Bailey, McDonald, Cooke, Hughes (Lane), Everall (Lennon), Lennon, Foster (Maguire).
