A collection of ships’ logs illustrated with drawings and watercolour sketches, sold for £6,190 at a Nantwich auction.
The most valuable compiled by Herbert Edward Leadam sold for £3,000 against and estimate of £400 at the Peter Wilson auction on Market Street.
Leadam, who sailed from London on the ship ‘Zealandia’ of Greenock in 1859 to New Zealand, was formerly a ship’s officer and probably trained as a midshipman to sketch what he saw on voyages for later research by the Admiralty.
Illustrations show some of the tall ships encountered during the voyage, as well as drawn and painted watercolours of a magnetic compass, course charts, and loose illustrations of compasses, all painted on card.
Handwritten pages contain detailed technical and navigational data, particulars of the usual daily nautical data and the occasional interesting mention of incidents during the voyage.
A journal recording the “Proceedings of the Honourable Company’s Ship Buckinghamshire” also attracted strong bids and sold for £1,100 against an estimate of £300-500.
A collection of 600 photographs and postcards of tall ships were sold in six lots, each with estimates of £100-200. They sold for £780.
But it was a lady’s Piaget white gold and diamond bracelet watch that recorded the single highest price in the sale, selling for an above estimate £3,700.
It was bought by a private London buyer, while another, a Chopard Classique, dating from 2004, sold to a Berkshire private buyer for £3,500. It was sold by a Wirral vendor.
Entries are now being accepted for the saleroom’s next two-day auction of fine art and antiques on April 18-19.
