RSPCA staff in Nantwich have been hard at worked nursing this injured red squirrel back to health.

The protected mammal was taken to the Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in London Road after being hit by a car.

Rescuer David Graham found the animal injured in a busy road in Cumbria as they were out for a New Year’s Day walk.

The squirrel’s shoulder was fractured and he needed two months of bed rest and painkillers at Stapeley Grange.

Now he has been released back into the wild in woodlands at Stainburn Park, near to where he was found.

David, 25, said: “He wouldn’t have had a chance if left where he was so we waited for a break in the traffic to run and get him, and wrap him in one of our coats. There was another squirrel dodging cars to run back and forth to him.

“It’s so great to hear the squirrel has been returned to the wild in good health, I hope he finds his mate again.”

RSPCA inspector Martyn Fletcher said: “He didn’t move out of his box for the first three minutes, just poked his head out and looked around nervously.

“Then, as quick as lightning, he dashed out and ran straight up the tallest pine tree around. He had obviously been thinking, planning and eyeing it up, his instincts still firmly in place.”

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
