John Dwyer - Cheshire PCC

Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer has called on the Government to rethink a decision to freeze police officers pay.

Last week, the Government made the decision to freeze police officer pay for all of those whose salaries exceed £24,000 in 2021/22.

Those whose salary falls under that threshold will receive a small increase of £250.

Mr Dwyer, a Conservative who regained the PCC position in May, said: “Here in Cheshire, police officers and staff have worked tirelessly to keep people safe and protect them from harm, during some of the most unprecedented times this country has seen in a long time.

“The way in which Cheshire Constabulary and forces across the country have pulled together over the past 16 months is something that I am immensely proud of.

“I am disappointed that the Government, doesn’t want to acknowledge, let alone reward the sacrifices of the thin blue line, in a similar way to our colleagues in the NHS and fire service.

“These salary increases are well deserved, but I think acknowledging the policing contribution to this pandemic is just as important.

“We’re being asked to recruit more officers to fulfil the Government’s ambition of having 20,000 new officers and our local communities are asking for an increase to the visible policing presence.

“This disregard for police officers and staff is just completely unfair.

“With this in mind, I am calling on the Government to rethink their decision in this matter.”

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
