Friends are staging a month-long fundraising campaign in support of a young Wistaston boy who is battling cancer for the second time in his life.
Georgy Capener, 10, was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma two years ago.
The Wistaston Church Lane pupil had to have a large part of his arm and shoulder bones removed and replaced with titanium.
Now two years on, his family have been dealt a further blow as specialists told them Liverpool FC fan Georgy had relapsed.
But friends and family, led by fundraiser Joanna Edge, are determined to help with a special month-long campaign in June.
The idea is for people to pledge to walk a certain number of steps each day throughout June and raise funds for Cancer Research UK and purchase a gift for Georgy.
A total of 140 people have signed up to take part.
Organiser Joanna, a close friend of the family, said: “Georgy is fighting cancer again for the second time so this inspired me to create this event.
“It’s heartwarming that so many people have signed up already.
“Everyone that’s registered has paid £5 to myself which is entirely separate to the just giving page and ALL being used to buy a present for Georgy at the start of his treatment.”
Georgy was diagnosed with the rare form of bone cancer in May 2018 and he underwent nearly a year of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an operation to remove his right humerus bone, elbow and shoulder and had them replaced with titanium.
Mum Helen said: “Me and Jo met when both our now 18-year-old daughters started school together and she has been an amazing friend ever since.
“During this time Jo was a massive support.
“She has always felt very strongly about raising money for charities and has been doing this for many years.
“But during this time she excelled herself by throwing herself into fundraising alongside her normal job!
“She raised money for Bone Cancer Research by doing the swim part of a Triathlon.
“And she organised a hugely successful Ladies Night where she put so much hard work and sweat into it and ended up raising a massive amount for both Georgy and Children with Cancer UK.
“I know she has helped with many other charities over the years too.”
On May 1 this year, Helen and husband Rich were hit with the news that Georgy had relapsed.
“Rich and I are staying strong and keeping positive for Georgy,” added Helen.
“He has two brilliant big sisters that wait on him hand and foot, Ellie who’s 18 and Chloe who is 13.
“Georgy really looks up to them, we are a strong family with so much support around us.
“Jo has already been hard at work again by organising the step challenge where people pledge their steps and walk every day for the whole of June.
“This woman has a heart of gold so please, just a small donation to Cancer Research can go a long way
into finding better treatments for cancer in both adults and children.”
A Facebook Page has been set up charting Georgy’s battle, and includes tributes and video messages of support from Liverpool FC player Joe Gomez and all the players and coaches at Georgy’s local team, Betley FC.
