A man found stabbed to death on New Year’s Day in Derbyshire was originally from South Cheshire, it has emerged.

Martin Griffiths, a former Shavington High School pupil, was found dead with his partner Helen Hancock (nee Almey) at a house in Duffield.

Father-of-two Martin (pictured), 48, grew up in Wistaston area and has friends in South Cheshire.

After leaving Shavington High in 1988, he studied A levels at South Cheshire College and later at Chester Art School.

He had recently met Helen and were celebrating New Year’s Eve together.

Mr Griffiths’ family issued a tribute, saying: “Martin was a lovely dad, husband, son, brother and uncle, who had a passion for adventure, running and a love of animals.

“He enjoyed travelling the world, mountain climbing and spending time with his two children.

“He will be greatly missed. We would also like to ask that people respect our privacy and allow us space to grieve as we attempt to come to terms with his death.”

Chris West, director of design agency 22 Create Ltd, where Mr Griffiths worked in marketing, told BBC he was “a highly valued colleague” and a “good friend to us all”.

“This has come as a huge shock to us all,” he added.

Police say they were found by officers with fatal stab wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who had contact with the suspect or victims in the days prior to the incident to come forward.

Rhys Hancock has been charged with two counts of murder.

The 39-year-old, of Portland Street, Etwall, will appear at Derby Crown Court on Monday (January 6).

Officers investigating the incident want speak to anyone who may have information that can help build a picture of the days leading up to the incident.

Detective Inspector Steve Shaw, said: “As with any investigation it is vital that a full picture of the incident is able to be established.

“That is why I am asking for anyone who may have had contact with Rhys Hancock, Helen Hancock or Martin Griffiths in the days prior to the incident to get in contact.

“In particular, we are interested to hear from anyone who spoke with Rhys Hancock on New Year’s Eve.

“If you believe you have information that may be able to assist in our enquiries then please do not hesitate to contact us using any of the methods below.”
