Councillors are appealing for help to track down vandals after several trees were damaged on the Millennium Green in Hough near Shavington.
They say the damage was inflicted in the past 48 hours, describing it as “significant deliberate and criminal damage to several beautiful trees”.
They believe someone has ‘ring-barked’ and poured toxic motor oil over the exposed wood.
Cllr Janet Clowes (Wybunbury Ward) said police have been informed as well as senior tree officers at Cheshire East Council.
She said: “Sadly our officers have confirmed that whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing and this act will cause the death of these trees over time.
“These beautiful trees are a much-valued feature of the important ‘Millennium Green’ in the heart of the Village and Residents are justifiably angry at this desecration of their public open space.”
Cllr Graham Bennion (Chairman of Hough Parish Council) added: “We believe this damage was caused at some point over the weekend.
“The Parish Council will be working with residents and Cheshire East Council to consider how best to repair the immediate and long-term damage to the Green.
“But in the meantime we would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity in and around the trees on the Millennium Green over the weekend to contact the Cheshire Police as soon as possible quoting incident number IML509358.”
