Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling opened at The Nantwich Players theatre on Friday night, writes Claire Faulkner.

Directed by Marie Straker, this is a touching and heart-breaking story of a group of women showing their friendship, strength and resilience in good times and bad.

Set in Truvy’s Hair and Beauty Salon in Louisiana, the characters meet up to discuss issues of the day, gossip about one another and share secrets.

The all female cast did a wonderful job, and I felt connected to each character on stage.

I laughed along and celebrated with them, and I also felt their pain and grief.

Vickie Lee was wonderful and playful as Truvy.

Katy Walker played a great M’Lynn and gave a truly emotional performance in the second act.

Olive Holding played Annelle, Shelby was played by Molly Little, Moria Hignett played Clairee and Ouiser was played by Jo Pennell.

The set design of the beauty salon was clever and fun, and this gave the production a great sense of place.

I enjoyed watching this play.

Even though each character had their own story, a running theme of friendship and community shone through.

Steel Magnolias is playing until September 14 at The Players Theatre.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
