Matthew Kenvyn, Woore CC

Twelve-year-old Matthew Kenvyn scored his first ever 50 in men’s cricket when he opened the batting for Woore CC 3rds against Crewe, writes Roger Horwood

Although Woore were beaten, the youngster scored a remarkable 70 not out having carried his bat throughout the innings in the Stone and District Sunday League.

Matthew (pictured) was resolute in defence and played some fine attacking strokes, and the Crewe bowlers could not remove him.

He has already opened for Woore 1sts against Sandyford in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire Cricket League and is playing for Shropshire in his age group.

Matthew is one of several promising youngsters developing through the much envied Junior Woore Academy.

Meanwhile, Woore CC 1sts suffered a bad day at the office as they slumped to their first defeat of the season.

But they remain five points clear of their opponents Bagnall Norton at the top and 53 points ahead of Norton-in-Hales in third place.

Woore won the toss and chose to bowl, and although Craig Ruscoe made an early breakthrough for the first wicket (7-1) the other opener Tony Dutton (51) and Josh Graham (21) piled on the runs until the latter was dismissed with the score at 60 for 2.

A spilled routine slip catch when Dutton was let off the hook at 30-1 did not help and the home team took full advantage with their overseas professional Asif Raza (68) and Justin Mould (40) helping Bagnall reach 223-7.

Two incidents occurred during Bagnall’s innings which involved two of Woore’s best batsmen.

First, Bagnall’s Raza blasted a mighty six over the pavilion which resulted in the rear car window of Hassan Ul Qasim Haleem being smashed.

And then off the last ball of the innings Khalid Malik taking a fine catch on the boundary damaged two fingers as it was about to hit the grass.

A rapid hospital visit resulted in both fingers being wrapped in bandages making it extremely unlikely he could hold a bat.

In reply, at five wickets down for 30, Woore were heading for a heavy defeat with all three Bagnall Norton’s main bowlers Raza, Willott and Bennett taking three wickets each by the end of the game.

Rain reduced the Woore innings to 49 overs, and despite Malik bravely coming out to bat at Number 11 to try to save the game, Woore were finally bowled out for 102.

Meanwhile, Woore 2nds continue to press hard for promotion from Division 6 and having beaten Bagnall Norton 2nds at the Falcon Field are just two points off the promotion places.

Abbas Muktar (4-29) and Usman Yaqub (3-27) helped limit the opposition to 151-8 before openers Andrew Burton (46) and youngster Matthew Kenvyn (27) put Woore on the road to victory.

Next Saturday, Woore 1sts are at home to Porthill Park 2nds, wickets pitched 12.30pm.

The 2nds have no fixture due to a major social event on the ground at Ashcombe Park.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
