Fig Pie Wakes - Hundreds watch Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes

Thousands are expected to descend on Wybunbury next week at the popular and quirky Wybunbury fig pie wake event.

It sees villages competing to roll their home-made fig pies the furthest down the village high street.

People come from far and wide to line the streets and watch young and old alike compete in various categories of pie rolling!

It’s a tradition dating back more than 200 years, and the participant whose pie rolls furthest down the hill will pick up a trophy and the coveted champion pie-roller title.

The annual event, which this year is on Saturday June 9, raises money for the village charities and helps with the maintenance of Wybunbury’s famous leaning church tower.

The fun starts at 1pm, and there will be plenty of other entertainment including Salt City Jazz Men, Funky Choir, Steam Engines, Children’s magic, Punch & Judy, Tower tours, Tree Carving and Market Stalls.

John Mahon, of Wybunbury Tower Trust and organisers, said: “RedShift Radio will be helping to compere on the day, and there will be refreshments on offer.

“Those keen to take part in the fig pie rolling can collect entry forms from Wybunbury Post Office. Come and see a unique event on your doorstep!”

Nantwich Police will close Main Road in the village for around one hour to allow around 200 fig pies to be rolled.

A video featuring last year’s quirky tradition has been viewed more than two million times on popular Facebook page LADBible.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
