Nantwich is to welcome singing sensation Milly Forrest, a former cloakroom attendant who shot to fame after standing in for a soprano who was ill.
The 24-year-old wowed critics last year when she stepped into the spotlight at the world-famous chamber music venue Wigmore Hall in London where she worked evenings as an usher.
With a soprano voice described as “breathtaking,” Milly hit national headlines and has since graduated with First Class Honours from the Royal College of Music while taking the lead in many high-profile operatic productions.
Local music-lovers will have a chance to hear why Milly became an overnight star when she performs a stunning solo set during Nantwich Choral Society’s Easter concert at St Mary’s Church on March 24.
The Society will perform Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, the moving medieval hymn meditating on the motherly sorrows of Mary at the Crucifixion.
Nantwich Sinfonia, a fully professional orchestra drawn from South Cheshire, will play Slavonic Dances (Opus 46 No 8) part of a series of orchestral pieces composed by Dvorak in the late 1800s.
The 7.30pm concert will be conducted by Nantwich-based John Naylor – regarded as one of the region’s most experienced musical directors after performing with world-class choirs.
The Society will also be joined by St Mary’s organist Simon Russell, as soloist in the thrilling Poulenc Organ Concerto as well as mezzo soprano Susan Marrs, tenor Stephen Newlove and baritone Jake Phillips.
Society spokeswoman Elizabeth Lea said: “Now in our 45th year, Nantwich Choral Society is held in high regard in music circles and attracts some of the country’s finest musical talent to play either at St. Mary’s Church or the Civic Hall.
“On the night before British Summer Time begins, and as we turn our thoughts to Easter, this concert will offer a chance to hear well-established names and a rising star.
“We are especially thrilled to welcome Milly Forrest whose story set the classical music world alight and has gone on to receive many rave reviews.”
The Society, comprising 105 singers, packed St Mary’s for their Christmas concert and drew many would-be singers to their ‘Come Sing’ event in February offering the public a chance join in the rousing sound of Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast.
