David Forbes for Nantwich against Sandbach - Nantwich to face Crewe Alexandra next

Nantwich Town have been drawn at home against neighbours Crewe Alexandra in the next round of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

It follows a 2-0 victory for the Dabbers away in the first round at Sandbach United last night (January 17).

Goals from Sean Cooke on 42 minutes, and a second half strike from Harry Clayton on 64 minutes ensured a relatively smooth passage against a well-organised Sandbach side.

The second round clash with Dave Artell’s League Two outfit is a repeat of the Cheshire Senior Cup final from last season, which Crewe won 3-2.

A date for the fixture has yet to be set.

Meanwhile, Dabbers player/coach Steve Jones believes the side’s results will improve at home following the team’s weekend win away at Halesowen Town.

Joe Mwasile’s first half strike was enough as the Dabbers battled well against the Yeltz in tough conditions on Saturday, and Jones said the team deserved all three points.

He said: “It was very important to win, we needed a good performance off the players and that’s what we got. We fully deserved the three points.

“Maybe with having a young squad they feel that extra pressure at home, but I’m sure we will come through it and get the points some of our performances deserve.

“If we keep working hard then the results will come. Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard enough!”

The game saw defender Joel Stair missing through suspension, and with Toby Mullarkey also absent, Jones was full of praise for full back Troy Bourne who put in a fine display in the centre of defence.

“I’ve coached Troy for a few years now, and has the attributes to go a long way if he keeps improving and learning. I’m sure the future is bright for him.”

Nantwich are next in action this Saturday January 20 at home to Lancaster City in the league, kick off 3pm at Weaver Stadium.
