academy visit, mercenaries of mercia

Youngsters at Nantwich Primary Academy and Nursery were taken back in time by some special visitors.

Pupils in Year 4 who have been studying Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, were surprised when members of the Mercenaries of Mercia marched into their class!

The group, based at Whittington Castle (Oswestry), re-enact medieval periods between the 11th and 13th centuries.

Their teacher Fay McMaster is also part of the group and was dressed as an Anglo-Saxon.

They spoke to the children about how Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans lived as well as showing them armour and weapons used.

The class were shown how to dress a knight as well as getting a chance to feel medieval battle garments.

Children also witnessed sword and spear fights on the school field, and a bow and arrow display.

“I really enjoyed the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Normans coming into class, it was such a surprise. The fighting was so cool,” said pupil Pippa

“I learnt a lot from the group of men. It was very good and interesting,” added Year 4 Billy.

The group includes people from an array of professions including police officers and retired teachers.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
