A woman and four children are in hospital after a house fire in Crewe, police have confirmed.

The blaze broke out on Selworthy Drive at around 2.30am today (May 17).

A 34-year-old woman at the house along with four children, aged 15, 13, 12 and 9, had escaped through a downstairs window from the property.

They were taken to Leighton Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Police say they remain in hospital “at the current time”.

Fire crews from Nantwich and Crewe along with paramedics attended the fire which was found to be well alight.

Detective Sergeant Richard Johnson said: “We are currently keeping an open mind into the cause of this fire and we are working closely with our partners to determine the cause of ignition.

“We are currently conducting a number of inquiries in the local area.

“As part of this investigation I’m keen to hear from anyone who was in the Selworthy Drive area at the time of the incident and believes that they may have witnessed anything suspicious.

“I urge anyone with any information to contact the team here at Crewe CID on 101.”

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Cheshire Police in 101 quoting incident number 56 of 17/5/2017.
