Solicitor - David Young and Head of Department Edward Nutting

A Nantwich solicitor is retiring after more than five decades at the same business.

Hibberts Solicitors have said farewell to long-standing consultant David Young, who began with the firm 50 years ago.

The former Nantwich and Acton Grammar School student began his legal career at Dixon Bevan Riggall & Durrad in Nantwich after gaining a first class degree at Pembroke College Oxford.

He said: “My family were tenant farmers, but I always wanted to go into law from an early age.

“And when I gained joint second in the Law Society Finals while I was at university that allowed me a scholarship for my final year.

“Since then I’ve largely concentrated on property law and agriculture, which also involves looking at tax and partnership issues and buying and selling agricultural land.

“The nature of the work hasn’t really changed, though obviously the firm has.

“The partnership has expanded, as when I joined there were two partners, two assistants, three secretaries and an accountant, so in total there were around 20 people and now it’s closer to 100.

“You need to always put the client first, and it’s my clients which have kept me in law for so long.

“I have acted for them over many years and they are now more like friends.”

Mr Young has played an active part in the local community, serving as parish councillor for 30 years, chairman of Malbank School Governors, and on bodies including Chester and North Wales Law Society and Cheshire Association of Agricultural Valuers.

He is also director of the Nantwich Agricultural Society and remains active with Cheshire Freemasonry.

Stewart Bailey, managing partner of Hibberts, said: “David has been at the very heart of Hibberts for many years, working extensively with the agricultural community throughout Cheshire and beyond.

“He brought great knowledge to his work, and as a farmer’s son, an inherent understanding of the needs of his clients, many of whom are now in their second or third generation.

“Having had the privilege of knowing him for over 25 years I wish him all the best in what is a thoroughly well-deserved retirement.

“He leaves the agricultural department at Hibberts in the safe hands of Edward Nutting, another farmer’s son, who will continue the exemplary work David was renowned for.”

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
