Wainhomes housing plan for land at back of Brine Leas, proposed housing scheme by Wain Homes

Housing developer Wainhomes has lost an appeal to build 104 homes on green land off Audlem Road in Nantwich.

The developer, who already have permission for around 40 houses on a field behind Brine Leas School, had the initial larger proposal rejected by Cheshire East Council in November last year.

However, they appealed against the decision and a public inquiry was held by a planning inspector in September at Crewe Alexandra FC.

Now campaigners and local councillors have been told that the appeal has been dismissed by the planning inspectorate.

Campaigners like Pat Cullen, of Protect Stapeley, have fought the application because of its impact on traffic along the narrow A529 Audlem Road, as well as cause a loss of green space and increase pressure on schools and health services.

councillor Peter Groves, bypass planPat said: “One of the grounds for dismissal was that the proposed access road to Audlem Road would be unsafe.

“A victory for common sense.

“Two points to note however – Wainhomes can appeal to the High Court and they do have permission to build 33 houses on the ‘small’ field behind 144.”

Cllr Peter Groves (pictured), representing Stapeley and Nantwich South on Cheshire East Council, said he was “delighted” at the news the appeal had been dismissed.

“We can’t do anything about the 40 houses they have permission for, but this means we’ve prevented another 64 houses which is great news.”

Before the inquiry in September, Wainhomes submitted a revised planning application for the 104 homes.

This was also rejected by Cheshire East Council in July.

The plan for more homes was backed by Brine Leas School, as part of the deal would have seen more land released to the school for further expansion.
